The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum covers the story of the military ships built at and people stationed at Portsmouth, displaying historical items ranging from antique weaponry to Civil War uniforms to models of ships built at the shipyard. A prize exhibit is the Lightship Portsmouth, constructed in 1915 and stationed at Portsmouth as an aid to ships trying to reach land; today visitors can board the ship and see displays related to the ship's service. Set on the waterfront, just a block east of the Children's Museum of Virginia, the museum is in the Old Towne area of Portsmouth.
